The Artist Apprenticeship
A creative education programme for young artists aged 5–18.
The Artist Apprenticeship is a hands-on studio programme where children and young people learn traditional creative skills, develop their own artistic voice, and experience the confidence that comes from making something meaningful with their own hands.
Rooted in intentional creativity, practical learning and the belief that every person is created to create, the apprenticeship combines art, craft, reflection and personal development within a calm and welcoming studio environment.
More Than an Art Class
The apprenticeship is not focused on producing identical projects or following instructions perfectly.
Each apprentice is encouraged to explore materials, make decisions, solve problems, practice patience and discover what kind of artist they are becoming.
Sessions may include:
- Weaving, fibre arts and textile design
- Drawing, painting, collage and mixed media
- Nature-based and seasonal projects
- Artist studies and creative conversation
- Reflection, journaling and portfolio development
- Independent studio projects
- Exhibition preparation and presentation
The process matters as much as the finished work.
Learning as We Grow
Apprentices begin with the Red Level Foundation Programme, which introduces the rhythms, responsibilities and creative practices of the studio.
As their skills and independence develop, they may continue through seven colour levels:
Red · Orange · Yellow · Green · Blue · Indigo · Violette
Each level represents increasing technical ability, creative independence, artistic maturity and responsibility within the studio.
Apprentices work toward:
- A completed body of creative work
- An individual artist’s journal
- A developing portfolio
- A final personal project
- An artist statement
- A certificate of completion
- Participation in an exhibition or studio presentation
Age Groups
The programme is adapted to suit each apprentice’s age, abilities and stage of development.
Junior Apprentices: Ages 5–7
Shorter, highly guided sessions focused on sensory exploration, storytelling, colour, rhythm, nature and the joy of making.
Developing Apprentices: Ages 8–12
Structured projects that introduce creative techniques, studio habits, reflection and greater independence.
Senior Apprentices: Ages 13–18
More advanced technical learning, independent project development, portfolio building, artistic identity and exhibition preparation.
Mixed-age sessions may be offered where appropriate, with each apprentice working at their own level.
The Studio Experience
Each session follows a steady rhythm:
Arrival and welcome
Opening intention or prayer
Artist conversation or demonstration
Hands-on creative work
Morning or afternoon tea
Reflection and journaling
Portfolio photography and documentation
Studio care and clean-up
This rhythm helps apprentices feel settled, understand what is expected, and gradually take greater responsibility for their work and environment.
What Apprentices Develop
Through regular creative practice, apprentices build:
- Confidence and self-trust
- Fine motor and practical skills
- Concentration and patience
- Creative problem-solving
- Emotional awareness
- Respect for materials and tools
- The ability to complete long-term work
- Pride in their individual ideas
- A sense of belonging within a creative community
Our Philosophy
We believe creativity is part of being human.
Making art allows us to slow down, listen, notice and express what cannot always be explained in words. It strengthens our connection to ourselves, to others, to the natural world and to our Creator.
The studio is a place where mistakes are part of learning, ideas are taken seriously, and every apprentice is supported to grow in skill, courage and imagination.
Programme Information
The Artist Apprenticeship is offered as a term-based programme, with places limited to maintain a calm and personal studio environment.
All core materials, use of studio tools, an artist’s journal, portfolio documentation and a certificate of completion are included unless otherwise stated.
